There are many different types and sizes of
sailboats. The type that is chosen is usually based on a few
different factors. The most important factor is the sailor’s
experience. If the sailor has very little experience they will not
be able to handle the large sailboats. Another important factor is
the amount of space that is needed. People who only take day trips
will most likely want a smaller boat that is easier to handle.
Those that are planning to take extended trips will want a boat
that has a large enough cabin area for everyone on board to be
comfortable.
The most commonly referred to type of sailboat is called a sloop. A
sloop is any sailboat that only has one mast. Most of today’s
sailboats are technically referred to as a Bermuda Sloop. However,
not all single mast sailboats are Bermuda Sloops. There ar other
kinds of sloops too. These sloops are named based on differences
that are found on those styles as opposed to the Bermuda Sloop.
These differences can be related to how the sails are shaped or
whether they have a boom or not.
Many sailboats have two masts instead of just one. These sailboats
are either referred to as a schooner, a ketch, or a yawl. The
differences in these types of sailboats refer to where the second
mast is located and the size of the mast. The ketch and yawl styles
of sailboats have a larger mast in the front of the boat with a
smaller mast in the rear. The difference in these two types of
vessels is where the smaller mast is located in regards to the
rudder mast. A schooner may have multiple masts. What makes this a
schooner is where the largest mast is located. If the second, from
the front, mast is the tallest it is then considered to be a
schooner.
Each of these different types of sailboats also come in a variety
of sizes too. Some sailboats can be as short as six feet long.
Other sailboats can be a hundred feet long or more. Most small
sailboats are seen on lakes and other smaller bodies of water.
However, if the sailor is experienced even the small boats will do
well on the open waters of the ocean.
